HUMOR IN CRAFT – Opening Reception

Posted on July 14, 2012 by Contemporary Craft

Public Reception – Friday, July 20, 5:30-8 pm

Curated by artist and author Brigitte Martin, editor of crafthaus, and organized by SCC, this world premiere exhibition presents highly ironic, political, sarcastic and just plain amusing works by 32 makers from across the United States and abroad. The concept of “funny” varies widely based on social background, personal experiences and values, knowledge of popular culture events, education, national origin and various other factors. There are overlaps, but also differences, in humor perception. Hardly any topic is off-limits for the artists in this exhibition. Everything can be made fun of. Why not laugh at the human foibles, the banana-peel jokes, and, yes, the politicians? Beginning July 21 through October 27, the exhibition is on view Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm.

July 20 also marks the first date SCC visitors can see an exclusive live installation created by Bill Chisnell Productions (BCP), Pittsburgh’s premier florist and event designer, to complement the Humor in Craft exhibition. In Polaroids to Pixels, BCP combines flowers and live materials with a variety of media, old and new, to create an eye-popping, interactive installation. BCP is SCC’s neighbor in the Strip, located at 1111 Penn Avenue.
