Polymer clay as a material boasts multiplicity of abilities. This medium is popularly used
sculpturally and as wearable jewelry. The origin story of polymer as a medium is
debated, but commonly known as being pioneered to create dolls. Artists quickly
became enveloped in polymer beginning in the 1970’s. As a young medium, artists are
still pushing the boundaries and exploring the variety of ways in which polymer can
perform. The malleability and expansivity of the medium have allowed for it to become
widely adopted in the craft world, as showcased here.
Jeffrey Lloyd Dever, Madiha Siraj, Joseph Barbaccia and Dan Cormier all work within
the polymer medium to achieve different goals. In viewing these works together, viewers
may question the possibilities of the medium, and discover its potential and place in art
making.
