Fiberart International 2016

Fiberart International 2016 is the 22nd in a series of triennial juried exhibitions sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, Inc. Featuring works by established and emerging artists the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see current trends and innovations in this constantly evolving medium. Recognized among fiber artists around the world as a benchmark exhibition, the Fiberart International highlights innovative work rooted in traditional fiber materials, structure, processes and history, as well as art, which explores unexpected relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines.

But what IS fiber art? Defined as artwork that is made of flexible, linear materials and/or constructed using textile techniques such as stitching, weaving, dying, and embroidering; fiber art may be two- or three dimensional and the materials used may be natural or man made. The featured artists in this exhibition have employed an astonishing variety of techniques and materials, often in a single work. Materials range from wool, linen, silk and paper, to hosiery, stainless steel, electric cords and false teeth.

A record breaking 79 artists and 81 works are included in the 2016 triennial, 18 of which reside outside the United States. Countries represented include Austria, Australia, Canada, Channel Islands, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, the Netherlands, Serbia, and the United Kingdom. The jurors also reflect the international aspect of the exhibition and include artist Chunghie Lee an internationally exhibited artist and lecturer from Seoul, Korea; Arturo Alonzo Sandoval a textile artist, curator, and professor teaching at the University of Kentucky, Louisville, KY; and Tali Wienberg an internationally known artist, writer, and curator based in Berkeley, CA. In selecting these works, the jurors chose works that were forceful and possessed a high degree of completeness that conveyed a mastery of the artists? techniques.
