Woodworking: Draft Flight Board with John Henley

4-Hour Workshop
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2026
Time: 1–5pm
Description: Make your Pittsburgh-themed flight board! Students will explore the foundations of woodworking—from milling a slab into a project board, to dowel joints, to finishing—with a fun custom project. First, we’ll mill a rough-sawn board into surfaced lumber. Then, we’ll add dowel feet and drill holes for drinking glass. Finally, students will choose from a variety of Pittsburgh-themed engraved coasters to inlay into their boards, from our sports teams to Jalapeno Hannah to an Eat’n’Park cookie—only Pittsburgh icons! Come with no woodworking experience and leave with a handmade souvenir of the Draft weekend in Pittsburgh!
As a bonus, we’ve partnered with the Pittsburgh Glass Center for this project, designing the board specifically around their house glassware brand, Penn + Fairmont! Each student will receive a discount on a set of P+F glassware!
Tuition: $90 + $20 materials fee
Materials: All materials will be provided.

About the Artist
John Henley is a woodworker, designer, and researcher who creates functional objects that build connection with the materials, landscapes, and people surrounding us. John received a B.Des in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University and served as an apprentice for master woodworker Tadao Arimoto. Having grown up in Oregon and now based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John’s interest in the landscape—both natural and built—impacts his work, which combines traditional craft practices and contemporary praxis. John has received multiple awards and residencies, including a fellowship with the Steve Jobs Archive and, currently, an apprenticeship with Contemporary Craft, where he is supporting arts education while maintaining a studio practice.
