Weeklong Workshop: Powder Coating Approaches

Date: Monday, August 10 – Friday, August 14

Time: 10am – 5pm (daily!)

Description: Color is such an important visual element and powder coating is one way to add vibrancy and personalization to your jewelry and artwork.

In this workshop, we will be demystifying the process and offering up accessible solutions that are low cost and low mess that you can do at home.

We will start our journey into powder coating by talking about how to properly prepare metal. We will then go into the different approaches to powder coating and dive into the fundamentals of sifting, stenciling, different types of sgraffito, and drawing on powder coated surfaces. From there, we’ll push the boundaries and go over how to powder coat non-metal materials. We will also set aside time for participants to work on personal projects that incorporate powder coating.

This workshop is great for people looking for alternatives to enameling and is open to all skill levels, whether you’re a beginner or longtime maker. No drawing experience necessary.

Tuition: $425 + $55 materials fee

Note: We want you to join us in the studio! Full and partial tuition scholarships are often available to offset some of the financial burden of attending a class. Please fill out the application here! You can expect to hear from someone on the CC staff within 2 weeks.

Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops.

Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the intensive begins. There will be a $45 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without two weeks notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

About the Artist

Andrew Thornton is a professional fine artist, trained at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He is a mixed media artist who works in painting, collage, metalsmithing, sculpture, polymer clay, resin, and jewelry. His work explores identity through magical realism and fantasy. He has projects that were featured in Kristal Wick’s book, “Foxy Epoxy” and was invited as a guest on the PBS shows, “Beads, Baubles, and Jewels” and “Make It Artsy”. Andrew is the Co-Owner and Creative Director of Allegory Gallery in Ligonier, PA. Allegory Gallery was one of SCORE’s 2018 American Small Business Championship winners. When he’s not creating art, making jewelry, or writing, he is working on Star Cottage Studio. Star Cottage Studio is a working studio in a 100 year old former school house. Andrew recently was appointed as a Board Member for Touchstone Center for Crafts and was awarded one of the Artist-in- Residence positions in the Metal Studio at Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA. He and his partner, William, live in their happy home with three cats, artwork covering every wall, and lots and lots of books and beads!
