Weeklong Intensive: Alternative Material Connections with Heather Nuber

Date: Monday, July 20 – Friday, July 24

Time: 10am – 5pm (daily!)

Description: Whether you’re working in all metal or getting weird with *alternative materials, creating intentional transitions and figuring out cohesive connections is always part of the process. In this workshop you will learn new ways of making connections, put twists on old standards, and be challenged to imagine and innovate. See lots of examples, learn new techniques, and go home with a sketchbook full of ideas, samples, and a finished piece! We will cover such techniques as complex riveting, various stitching methods, tabs and prongs, fibulas, various brooch backs, closures and other findings, as well as play with material explorations. All levels are welcome, Beginners will learn new skills including: piercing, filing, sanding, drilling, forging, annealing and soldering as needed. Advanced participants can push metal skills further while gaining new inspiration and processes.

Tuition: $425 + $50 materials fee

* Alternative materials include: found or natural objects, ceramics, glass, plastics, textiles, wood, and more. Students are encouraged to bring objects and alternative materials from home to incorporate into their work. The instructor will also provide materials and opportunities for sourcing.

Note: We want you to join us in the studio! Full and partial tuition scholarships are available to offset some of the financial burden of attending a class. Please fill out the application here! You can expect to hear from someone on the CC staff within 2 weeks.

Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops.

Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the intensive begins. There will be a $45 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without two weeks notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

About the Artist

Heather Nuber is an interdisciplinary artist/instructor with a focus in contemporary jewelry, textiles, and installation art. She received her MFA from Indiana University, and BFA in Metalsmithing from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and has studied at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Craft, Peters Valley School of Craft, and Touchstone Center for Crafts. Heather has exhibited work nationally and internationally, and done residencies at Gallery 2052, Torched, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Peninsula School of Art, Penland School of Craft, Smitten Forum, and The Birdsell Project. Heather is an instructor at the Toolbox Collective in Minneapolis. MN and Treehaus Studios in Osceola, WI, teaching metalsmithing, painting, and textile workshops. They have taught at PennWest University (formerly Edinboro University of Pennsylvania,) Indiana University, Indianapolis Art Center, Peninsula School of Art, Penland School of Craft, and Touchstone Center for Craft. Heather’s work focuses on the dynamics of personal relationships and social interactions.
