Rug Hooking 1: A Modern Twist on a Traditional Craft with Kirsten Ervin
March 20, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - May 8, 2025 @ 9:00 pm
8-Week Workshop
Date: Thursdays, March 20-May 8, 2025
Time: 6pm-9pm
Description: The course will provide an overview of traditional or “primitive” rug hooking, a utilitarian craft using fiber remnants (“thrums”) to create household goods. Participants will create two different rug hooking projects during the course: a wall hanging and a placemat. This craft has roots in pre-industrial England and the United States and is a way of creating illustration in fiber form. It is perfect for makers who both love fiber art and drawing/designing. The course will provide basic instruction in the craft for two rug hooking projects, including tools, materials, techniques, design and composition. It will also cover an in depth history of rug hooking and survey contemporary artists exploring new and inventive ways of using this craft.
