PGH Hand-Made Hearts
February 2 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
We are excited to host PGH Hand-Made Hearts on Saturday, February 2, 1 – 3 PM. Join us to make a handmade heart and tagging it with a positive message that can be placed in public to share compassion throughout Pittsburgh.
On October 27, 2018, worshipers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, were attacked in a senseless act of hatred. In response, local artist Barb Grossman and her family started “PGH Hand-Made Hearts” to make and place handmade hearts in public places as vivid reminders of the power of kindness. The mission of this project is to foster compassion for those impacted by acts of violence and hatred, as well as to discourage future acts of this nature. Let’s #ShareAHeartPgh, with #PghHandMadeHearts.
We will be supplying a variety of materials with instructions. You will be making a heart, tagging hearts with positive messages, and taking a few with you to put in places such as: libraries, lobbies, churches, mosques, synagogues, community centers, senior centers, auditoriums, at a bus stop, at the park, playground, on a hiking trail, and other places that your can think of.
If you can’t make it to this making session at Contemporary Craft, there will be other making sessions at the Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival on March 15 – 17.
You can also make the hearts at home (these 2″ – 3″ hearts can be hand stitched, machine stitched, embroidered, knitted, crocheted, made from wood, clay, and more) and drop them at designated locations: Amy Baughman Sew & Quilt, Ashgrove Soaps and Sundries, Cut & Sew Studio, Fine Points, Inc, Firecracker Fabrics, Flying Fibers, Kid Ewe Knot, Knitting on the Fringe, Lion Brand Yarn Studio – Manhattan, Lion Brand Outlet – New Jersey, Long Island Yarn and Farm, Loom Exquisite Textiles, McWalker Yarns, The Pittsburgh Yarn Company, Quilters Corner, Raggz Fiber Art, Songbird Artistry, and Yarns by Design.
If you happen to find a little heart in a public space in the meantime, please take a picture, note where you found it and post it to social media with the following hashtags: #ShareAHeartPgh, #PghHandMadeHearts, #Lovegreaterthanhate
